This full-bodied, rich, layered, beautifully textured, seamless effort needs to be tasted to be believed. I absolutely love it today and would drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years. Viognier-driven whites can age, but I vastly prefer them in their first 3-5 years of life, when the fruit is fresh and vibrant. 2024-2029
- WINE ADVOCATE, Matthew Laczy (072024): The 2022 Viognier Estate shows a much less exuberant side of the variety than is typical in California, especially in this challenging, warm vintage. The nose shows focused aromas of orchard fruits, tangerine, white peach and chamomile while the palate is rich and forward but avoids excess weight and concentration. It concludes on a refreshingly lifted, vibrant note framed by notes of dried flowers and crushed stones. John Alban is a pioneer through and through, having spearheaded the Rhône Ranger movement and set into motion what would become some of the Central Coast's most sought-after bottlings, both through his eponymous label and those he inspired and mentored. The Alban wines are unapologetically style-driven, anchored around ripe, forward fruit intensity and the equally unabashed use of extended élevage in new French oak. Although they remain primarily full-throttle examples of the Edna Valley, recent vintages have seen many wines reeled in from some of their prior hedonism, most notably the signature trio of vineyard-designate Syrahs. ;
